Investments for Income – Non-Financial Alternative Income Investments

Will Greece leave the Euro? Will Spain default on its debt? Will the global economic recovery fail? Will equity markets crash again?

There are the questions that Investors of all shapes and sizes are asking, but unfortunately, no-one really has any coherent answer. So with such uncertainty surrounding the fate of investments held in money market assets like shares, bonds and cash, most Investors and Financial Advisors are questioning the wisdom of holding the majority of investment portfolios in traditional asset classes, and are instead seeking out solid alternative investments based on the acquisition of tangible, physical property assets that are unlikely to depreciate to nothing - and which will always retain some capital value whilst generating often very high annual incomes.

Property investments are of course the first and most obvious port of call for the average Investors, as well-positioned and well-managed property assets are capable of generating income yields far exceeding the paltry returns on cash deposit accounts; and whilst inherently illiquid, property values are unlikely to fall in the long-term due to the fact that many markets have already shown a significant decline in value, allowing Investors to buy close to the bottom at reduced prices, further enhancing yield.

Not all markets offer such a great opportunity however, and the on-going costs and complexity of property management and tax liabilities make direct investments in many markets quite risky for the long-term Investor. There are of course a range of hands-off options for those considering property assets as investments for income, form property funds to REITs and new innovative structures such as property bonds - where a larger portfolios benefiting from economics of scale and independent management are accessible through the issuance of fixed income binds to private Investors who take a direct charge over the assets, without having to take direct ownership.

For those prepared to take on more risk, emerging markets also offer some interesting income opportunities, especially where Investor capital can facilitate short term developments where completed properties can be sold directly into the local market with buyer assisted financing.

Thinking About Tax Lien Investing

During irregular economic times, it is common for a person or family to no longer be able to afford to pay all of their debts owed. Some of the debts include taxes owed on their property such as their home. This can be particularly devastating but a part of the agreement that they make in taking on a purchase that if they cannot pay the mortgage to the bank then they could be foreclosed and they can be forced to vacate for new owners; moreover, tax sales do not mean immediate removal, but the occupying family simply does not own the home anymore.

They have up to three years to purchase it back, but it will cost them far more than a few missed tax payments.

Investments for Income – Which Asset Class Yields 20% Per Annum?

As Investors and Financial planners continue to reduce their exposure to money-market investments in order to reduce portfolio volatility and capital risk, at the same time low interest rates are driving appetite for alternatives investments capable of replacing lost risk-free income. In fact, for UK Investors, the best 3-year savings account yields just 4% per annum (2.4% after 40% tax), and with CPI inflation reducing the value of capital by 3.5% every year, cash held in deposit accounts will continue to lose value in real terms, hence the desire for high income alternatives.

Strategic property investments offer an interesting play for the Investor capable of tolerating the relative illiquidity associated with real estate assets, and many markets around the world offer a glut of opportunities as distressed sellers seek to rid their balance sheets of property assets in exchange for liquid capital. There is however a number of inherent risks associated with property investing, and direct investments often involve taking on the potential liabilities involved with tenant sourcing and management, annual taxes and property maintenance.

Income Investments – Where to Find a 20% Annual Return

Income investing is a widely used strategy; indeed most investment portfolios - large and small - will hold at least some income investments. Historically, Investors and Financial Planners have relied almost exclusively on financial markets to access regular income streams; either through share dividends, cash held in high-interest deposit accounts, bonds of varying types or other nice income generators such as Permanent Income Bearing Shares (PIBS).

Today we find that more and more Investors and Advisors are seeking out alternatives to money-market investments as volatility, economic uncertainty and dismal interest rates converge to limit the income producing potential of traditional financial instruments. Many in fact are refocusing on that old favourite; property.

Income Investment – Where to Find the Best Investment for Income

In the current economic climate, many Investors and Financial Planners are seeking alternatives to volatile stock markets and dismal deposit accounts in an effort to boost portfolio income without dramatically altering overall risk profile. One such are of interest for the Income Investor is strategic property, as high-yield property assets can be acquired from distressed sellers with deep discounts to market value, enhancing income returns and reducing capital risk.

There are number of markets around the world where, in the tail end of the global financial crisis, income-generating property assets can be acquired from financial institutions keen to rid their balance sheets of illiquid assets in order to borrow freely in money markets. Indeed, holding defaulted loans or repossessed properties can limit the amount of borrowing a financial institution can do, and as such many are prepared to let these asset go at rock-bottom prices.

The most obvious market for Investor to consider is the US property market, where the bulk of sub-prime mortgage defaults have now been processed and foreclosed and a glut of property sits empty and unsold.

The advent of online share trading has seen a dramatic increase in stock market newsletters and courses. Many traders inadvertently find themselves stuck in the beginner's cycle. They may have attended a course or seminar, or purchased a black box system only to find the results are drastically different from those that were touted, so they move onto the next one.

Others may have purchased some trading software and read a few books to begin a more self directed approach, only to find themselves suffering from 'analysis paralysis' as they discover the plethora of indicators within the software and devote much time to discovering the holy grail.

Indexed Universal Life: Flexibility For All Phases of Life

In order for a financial vehicle to be worthy of all phases of a consumer's lifetime, it must be liquid, it must have a proven track record (or rate of return) and it must have the flexibility to adapt to the consumer's changing financial needs. Indexed universal life is a unique strategy that can provide all of these features and more. Let's take a closer look at how IUL can be a fit for each phase of a consumer's life: introduction, accumulation and preservation.

Euro Exchange Rate Allows Holiday Money to Go Further

There may be one less economic thing to moan about as the uncertainty in the eurozone has caused the Euro to weaken against the pound to a level not seen for three and a half years.

Uncertainty stemming from the recent elections in Greece and France has led to investors and holiday makers obtaining up to €1.20 to £1. In real terms, the difference from a year ago is €52 extra when exchanging £500.

Richard Driver, a currency analyst at Caxton FX believes that the pound could strengthen further against the Euro. 'Sterling is gaining plenty of momentum thanks to its growing safe-haven status and considering the chronic instability within the eurozone, we could realistically see the pound hitting the 1.30 euro mark by the autumn.'

Although things do look bleak for the eurozone it seems as though the days may be gone of when you go the Post Office with a quantity of sterling and are returned with the same quantity but in a different currency.

Investing Strategies: Assessing Risk Tolerance

One of the things that you really need to think about before you even decide to put your money in a financial vehicle on the way to fiscal independence and early retirement is the risk tolerance that you are going to have. What does that mean? Well, simply put, you need to be absolutely comfortable with the amount of money that you are going to invest. That may sound easy enough but you are not going to believe how many people fall prey to the notion that they are going to have to put more money than they want into a prospect.

Passive And Index Funds – Have You Done Your Research?

As part of the continual research that we do on the subject of investing, we have noticed a rising trend in financial advisers and the general public becoming more aware of passive and tracker funds.

We have been involved with this style of investing for many years now, and although it is very plain to us that it (in our opinion) is the most robust and academically proven route to investing one's capital (as opposed to investing in alternatives, such as 'active' funds), it has taken some time to become more mainstream.

Now, however, there is much more coverage in the press about this way of investing, and Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of the Investment Managers Association commented recently that passive funds had experienced a 12% rise in the value of the amount of money being invested in them in 2011 as compared to 2010.

Some of the media coverage included 'This is Money:

"Investors ditch expensive fund managers for trackers. Despite the vast amounts of money still being thrown at active fund managers, the average UK fund has been beaten over five years by ones which blindly follow the FTSE All Share."

IFP

Then there was the meeting of the North East branch of the Institute of Financial Planning (IFP) Ray & I attended. There were some good speakers, including Tim Hale, author of 'Smarter Investing', whom we have met many times before.

Tim is excellent at pointing out the merits of passive funds and presented to us an example of how hard it is for an active fund to beat a passive fund on average, over time and after costs.

Remember, an active fund aims to beat the market by holding the right shares (and will often trade shares on a regular basis to try and achieve its objective).

A passive fund simply buys the market, and trades very little as it is based on a 'buy & hold' strategy.

Tim put a slide up that had 353 dots on it, with a 40 year time period.

Inescapable Challenge

THE INESCAPABLE 2012 INVESTMENT CHALLENGE And Its Deserved Canadian Bias

Debt of unprecedented magnitude - the servicing of which is devouring unsustainable proportions of disposable income, personal wealth and overall economic output.

Debt so debilitating that three members of the 17-country Eurozone - Greece, Ireland and Portugal have already needed to be bailed out (Greece twice), while within the 27-strong European Union note worthies like Spain, Italy, France and even the United Kingdom have needed to be put on life support under painful austerity programs.

Neither should it be much different in a debt and deficit-riddled U.S.A. where "it's the economy, stupid" is once again the battle cry in a bruising presidential election campaign, that is already well up and running.

If there is some accompanying good in all of this it is that the developed world has at last awoken to a serious debt habit, the longer it lasts the harder it is going to be to shake.

A legacy of debt like no other is also why 2012 increasingly emerges as a pivotal year in which there is already no choice but to be "inescapably" invested.

Today's artificially-low central bank-managed interest rates and a quiescent (for now) but ever-present risk of returning inflation are two imperative reasons for switching the focus to equities rather than bonds.

Inevitably, the markets as opposed to the central bankers will begin calling the shots as to where interest rates should truly settle. It's already happening in Portugal, Spain, Italy and other EU countries and could well come sooner than currently thought in the U.S.

Remember, as well, that history shows few if any nations ever paying off their debts instead succumbing time and again to the temptation of inflating them away.

Property Investments – How Have Niche Property Investments Performed?

Investment Performance of Niche Property Investments

Again, it is difficult to define the investment performance of the property sector as a whole within the context of this document, due to the wide variety of sub-sectors and regions which must be considered. In the UK for example, residential real estate has delivered markedly different performance for each Investor that has participated depending on their strategy (buy to let/distressed assets/development etc), and residential property as a whole has delivered a different performance to commercial property or student accommodation. The same can be said for every combination of sector, strategy and region, therefore the context of this document does not allow for a detailed analysis of the investment performance of the sector as a whole.

Residential - The UK market offers some interesting opportunities, as depressed prices combine with a lack of buyer financing to create a viable rental market that can deliver yields of between 4% and 8% after costs.

Investing in property, be it residential, commercial, agricultural, leisure, healthcare, student accommodation or some other niche property sector, is ostensibly the most popular and common form of alternative investment, and has been used as a low risk, long-term investment asset by many Investors. The main aim of the property investor is to capture income from rentals, and/or capital growth either through natural attrition or by adding capital value through development. Whatever the form or sector, property investments are solid, tangible and 'real' in that a property is unlikely to depreciate in the long term provided due care and consideration is given to due diligence in the acquisition stage.

Investment Strategy

The traditional form of property investment is the simple leveraged buy to let, where an Investor will acquire a property using a combination of cash and mortgage debt, and seek to cover the mortgage costs with rental income.

The Evolution of Azerbaijan: From Birthplace of Mankind to Eurovision 2012

It wouldn't be overstating the country's historical importance to call Azerbaijan one of the very few cradles of human civilization in the world, and yet it remains a relatively unknown corner of Central Asia on the world stage.

The history of the nation is punctuated by ancient civilisations and a progressive nature that has seen Azerbaijan embrace and foster culture, the arts and democracy often more readily than many other states in the Muslim world. As the country re-establishes its prominence as a leading global oil and gas producer, so it has also seen a re-emergence and re-discovery of its rich cultural and artistic heritage. Azerbaijan's hosting of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest is a showcase event of just how far the country has developed in recent years.

Rich in more than just culture and history, Azerbaijan's significant oil and gas reserves, as well as promising potential in the alternative energy sector such as wind, hydro and solar generated power are creating exciting investment opportunities to invest in Azerbaijan.

In the first instance we should look to the range of property sub-sectors available for consideration, and further investigate both direct and collective access points for the sector in general.

The main property sub-sectors that may be available for smaller investors are:

Commercial
Student Accommodation

The Advantages of Investing in a Coin Collection

There are certain collectors who are merely hobbyists and collect things for fun or simply because they enjoy accumulating the things that they gather. This may also be true for coin collectors, but most of these people eventually learn how to capitalize on their collection in the long run.

The potential of earning from the coins that you have collected is big, especially if you have a lot of rare types. A known coin collector, Harold Bareford, is a good example for this claim.

Outperforming the Market While Reducing Risk

Most investors want to enjoy the high, longterm returns provided by equities, but they can't stomach the volatility of the stock market. In the bear market of 2008, the S&P 500 lost 60% of its value. This is too much for people who need to rely on their investment portfolios for retirement.

GOAL/ OBJECTIVE:

To provide longterm gains that beat the market averages with less volatility than the overall market, and significantly less draw down during bear market corrections.

BASIC APPROACH:

Use low cost, unleveraged, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that track the broad market indices as investment vehicles.

Fear is the enemy of wealth building because it shuts you and your brain down, and stops you from taking any proactive steps to improve your financial well-being.

Rather than coming from a place of fear, it's best to come from gratitude, because gratitude allows you to think what's possible, to "hear" new ideas, and to keep an open mind so you can move forward.

CFD Strategy/Strategies

Going 'long' means you open a CFD position by buying it with the expectation that the price will go up and then selling it at a higher price, that's when you make the money.

Example of a 'long' CFD trade

STEP 1: To open a trade, you BUY300 BHP share CFDs at $28.00 with a 3% margin and $10 commission300 x $28.00 x 3% + $10 $8400 x 3% = $252$252 +10 = $262This means you will be required to have at least $262 in your trading account to open this BHP share CFD trade.

STEP 2: To close a trade, you SELLAfter you bought BHP share CFDs commodity prices jumped in the international market overnight. The following day the price of BHP shares are also expected to go higher and you want to close your BHP share CFD position. You sell 300 BHP share CFDs at $28.50 (for a 50 cents movement in each share CFD) - $10 commission300 x $28.50 = $8550

STEP 3: Checking your profit and lossYour profit and loss calculation will look like this:[(Sell price - Buy price) x number of share CFDs - commission][($28.50 - $28.00) x 300 - $20][.50 x 300 - $20]= $130 profit or 51.6% return for an initial outlay of $252 (margin required)

NB: This calculation does not include the financing charge which is calculated on a daily basis for as long as you hold your CFD position open. Financing charges may vary from one CFD provider to another.

Going 'short' means you open a CFD position by selling it with the expectation that the price will go down and then buying it at a lower price, giving you the profit even if the CFD price goes down.

Example of a 'short' CFD trade

STEP 1: To open a trade, you SELL300 BHP share CFDs at $28.00 with a 3% margin and $10 commission300 x $28.00 x 3% + $10 $8400 x 3% = $252$252 +10 = $262This means you will be required to have at least $262 in your trading account to open this BHP share CFD trade.

What Is CFD Or Contract For Difference?

A Contract For Difference (CFD) is a derivative trading instrument that allows you to trade the price movements (when you enter and exit a trade), without owning the underlying instrument, in most cases shares or equities but also indices and forex.

CFD trading is almost the same as to full price share trading except that when you trade a CFD you don't own the actual share. If you trade a CFD on the Commonwealth Bank or BHP Billiton, you are trading the price difference between your entry point and your exit point. You don't own the Commonwealth Ban or BHP Billiton shares, you are only counting on their price moving up or down.

Share CFDs are the most common type of CFDs is however there are also other CFDs for Sectors, Indices and other financial instruments such as commodities and treasuries.

Are You A Left Or Right Brain Investor?

Those of you who are new to the subject of Investment psychology might well be a little puzzled by the question.

What if I told you that knowing this information could have a major impact on how you make investment decisions and ultimately your long term success as an investor.

By the way the same goes for the traders among you, particularly if you are swing trading.

Before I delve deeper lets take a quick look at the difference between left and right brain and how it influences your decision making process:

The left brain operates in successive Hemispheric style, which basically means that it processes information in a linear fashion.

The right brain has a simultaneous hemispheric style which means it operates in a visual fashion.

The left brain plans ahead, sees things in an orderly succession, while the right brain operates in a random fashion, tends to be more impulsive and responds to emotion.

I think you can already see where this is going:

Maybe you recognise yourself as falling in one of the two groups? If so great. For those of you who do not readily recognise themselves as members of either group, maybe you are lucky and your brain is balanced, meaning that you will be much more flexible in your investment approach. This, however, is not the case for the majority of us.

Addressing the Problem of Carbon Leakage

The Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) has recently released a new report on the danger of carbon leakage, a consequence of the increasing cost of carbon offsetting. Although the report focuses on the leakage issue from a Scandinavian point of view, this is a problem for all carbon offsetting schemes, and particularly the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) in which the Nordic countries participate. Commencement of the more stringent EU ETS Phase III is likely to increase the risk of carbon leakage since the prices of EU allowances are expected to rise as a result of the switch to auctioning rather than free allocation for the bulk of Phase III allowances.

The phenomenon of carbon leaks appears when an emission reduction policy is being applied as is the case with the EU.

As with any potential transaction, all investments carry risk, and in the case of alternatives those risks are often very specific to the asset class, here we address some of the general risks associated with moveable and immoveable properties considered as alternative investments. This risk-set can be broadly defined and categorised as:

Sector Risk
Location Risk
Asset Specific Risk
Counterparty Risk

Sector Specific Risk

As is the case with traditional financial investments, hard-assets carry risks specific to their sector. For example, in the case of agricultural land, Investors must be aware that a variety of exogenous variables can affect the investment performance of the property.

Alternative Investments – Portfolio Planning Characteristics

This article focuses primarily on real-asset investments, and this section is designed to highlight some of portfolio planning characteristics of physical assets when considered as part of a well-diversified and balanced portfolio of investments, as well as some of the inherent risks to be considered when allocating investment capital to specific, niche investment sectors or projects.

Whilst real or hard-assets offer a number of significant benefits including reduced volatility, tangible asset values and the potential for superior investment performance that is not reliant on the performance of traditional financial investments, potential investors must give equal consideration to the potential for relative illiquidity, operational or management risks specific to the asset class, and of course counterparty risk exposure when investing in assets that require on-going expert management in order to maximise returns and minimise downside potential.

Portfolio Planning Advantages

Every asset class exhibits different characteristics when considered from the point of view of an Investor or Financial Planner, and Investors invariable choose to invest in specific assets in order to achieve specific goals such as risk mitigation, portfolio insurance, superior returns and a hedge against inflation or some other potential economic impact on the value and performance of their portfolio.

Here we look at some of the broad portfolio planning characteristics associated with a range of physical assets considered as alternative investments.

Capital Values

By their very nature, physical assets retain a disposal value throughout most economic circumstances, and whilst asset values will fluctuate from time to time, Investors allocate capital to hard-assets in order to underwrite the value of their portfolio and insure against the possibility of the values of listed financial assets falling sharply at any given moment. In fact, certain assets such as gold hold a 'safe-haven' appeal, often rising in value when stock markets falls as Investors sell equities and buy gold.

Non-Correlated Returns

The fundamentals that support value growth and income associated with real-assets are often far removed from the fundamentals that support traditional investments. Often, alternatives share a direct negative correlation with the performance of equities and bonds, affording investors the opportunity to balance their portfolios and make gains when other portfolio components lose value or underperform.

Real Asset Alternative Investments

Genuine alternatives to financial investments are considered to be 'real' or 'hard-asset' investments. Immoveable property such as real estate, farmland and timber properties are considered to be viable alternatives to financial assets, and moveable property like gold bullion, fine wine and rare stamps are also considered to be genuine alternative investment assets.

The case for real-asset investing is compelling; those with sufficient expertise in order to identify good quality assets in high demand can generate substantial financial gains as the inherent value of their assets grows over time. But in almost all cases, specific expertise is required in order to identify, properly value, and measure the risk associated with niche assets like timber properties or fine wine, and a lack of credible asset analysis, along with a non-existent regulatory framework have made this area of investing very high risk for most investors, many of whom have been subject to mis-selling, misrepresentation, poor advice or outright fraud.

Investors acquire certain assets as they are unlikely to depreciate over time, and when demand for the asset or its produce increases so too does the inherent value of the asset itself.

It is now a widely held belief that investing in stocks and other financial instruments in the traditional manner generates an investment return that is driven more by the latest piece of political rhetoric, or the most recent announcement of sovereign debt risk or unemployment figures from some far flung corner of the world, than by underlying company fundamentals like good management and a strong balance sheet. Aside from this inherent volatility, many investors also feel over-exposed to financial markets, especially those coming close to retirement that may have little time left to regain catastrophic losses in any one holding.

This shift in mind-set amongst investors has driven a huge growth in alternative investment management, with most financial institutions now offering investments that are organised and managed in such a way as to attempt to avoid volatility, or generate a return when markets fall, or some other such strategy.

Short OnlyShort only funds bet on particular stocks losing value. Investors might buy into a short only fund if they felt particularly bearish (pessimistic) about the short term future of financial markets in general, and some may allocate capital to this strategy as a hedge against the impact of a general downturn.

Ultra-Short Bond FundsThis a type of investment fund that invests fixed-income bonds with very short-term maturities.

Assessing Risk: Forestry And Farmland Investment

During the past five years, the global economic meltdown has spurred a spate of reorganizations of the investment portfolios of major institutional investors, many of which are now allocating more capital to real-asset alternative investments in an effort to reduce exposure to volatile financial markets, generate superior investment returns, and underwrite the value of their portfolios with the capital value of niche, income-generating property assets including forestry investments and farmland investment properties that are unlikely to depreciate in the long term.

The logic is sensible, and the likes of Yale University Endowment and their Harvard counterparts have all entered into long-term farmland and forestry investments as part of an overall refocusing of their investment strategy. Historically, land, gold and gems of varying types have been the only store of wealth, it is only since the introduction of fiat currencies that investors have sought to build cash gains, rather than aiming to build a sizable portfolio of land, property or other physical assets. Now, many smaller investors are taking heed of the big boys' new strategy, and investigating the potential benefits and risks associated with investing in commercial timber properties and agricultural land assets.

Both of these assets classes exhibit characteristics that hold particular appeal during times of economic turmoil.

Alternative Investments – 2 Key Assets That Will Continue to Grow in Value

Ask any experienced investor over the age of 50 what type of real-asset they wish they'd invested in when they were young, and the vast majority will most likely give one or more of two answers; gold and/or real-estate, and those who pay more of an interest in such matters might even whittle their selection down to niche agricultural real estate including farmland and timberlands. Why so then would anyone with 30 years of investing experience behind them, having seen rise and fall of many fads, bubbles, booms and busts, consider physical, tangible and useful assets in precisely the same light as the wealthy of centuries gone by, when value was literally only stored in land and precious items like gold and jewels?

OK, so put aside for a second that the recorded investment performance of farmland and forestry investments has outperformed the vast majority of traditional assets like equities for decades, it is now becoming ever-more apparent that the sensible investor, especially those who have been party to the consistent volatility in financial markets over the years, is choosing to acquire assets that retain a use and essential function, and where demand is growing and availability of suitable resources falling. These assets will always be in pretty high demand, as growing populations shift to a higher protein, more resource-intensive diet, and general population growth requires increased output of agricultural commodities for food and biofuel markets.

Agricultural Investments: Bringing Together Profit and Sustainable Development

Agriculture is an alternative investment class which is currently gaining traction on account of traditionally strong performance and positive returns to investors, especially in comparison with some other traditional assets. Nevertheless, it is important to think about the impact of agricultural investments in developing countries especially and to consider how to use those investments so as to contribute to sustainable development. Recently, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), an independent non-profit research institute, published an article exploring the purchase of land by agricultural investment funds in developing countries and the actions that might be taken to promote investments that will genuinely support local communities.

The IIED article, entitled "Farms and Funds: investment funds in the global land rush" (published in the IIED Global Land Rush January 2012 news brief), notes the increase in investment funds land and agribusiness purchases in developing countries.

Alternative Investments – Do Your Homework

Traditionally, investors have held a slim range of investment assets within their portfolios which have consisted primarily of stocks, bonds and cash, some more adventurous investors have even held physical gold and property. Now private investors are following the march of pension funds and university endowments; investing in a range of real asset alternative investments including niche real estate like commercial timber properties and agricultural land, in the hope that increasing demand for resources from emerging economies will drive both revenue from the sale of essential commodities (timber, food, biomass), and capital growth as suitable, productive assets become more scarce. Other investors, especially the wealthy, have also been investing in more esoteric alternatives like fine wine, rare stamps and a host of other tangible properties where demand will hopefully outstrip supply and generate growth.

There is of course a logical reasoning behind the allocating of capital to real assets investment alternatives; not least the fact that recent economic turmoil on a global scale hit portfolio values hard, and many investors coming to the end of their investing life feel that they may not have sufficient time to recoup losses, especially whilst markets remain so volatile and supported by central government policies like quantitative easing.

Gold bullion and coins such as sovereigns are perhaps the most common form of alternative investment held in an average portfolio. Gold has long been viewed by investors as portfolio insurance, sharing a negative correlation with the performance of equity markets.

Alternatives Investments – Making the Most of Your Portfolio

There are a number of reasons that seasoned investors chose to invest in alternative assets; mainly of course to diversify in to assets where investment performance is not driven by the performance of financial markets in general; but also in order to capture capital gains and income to replace ailing and volatile equities.

The appeal of real assets like farmland, timberlands, real estate and other, more esoteric assets like fine wine and collectibles, lies in the fact that these assets are all tangible properties, that are likely to retain the majority of their value, and continue to generate income, regardless of whether stock are up or down. The general consensus is that an investment portfolio consisting entirely of stock, bonds and cash is grossly over-exposed to the day to day vagaries of 'the markets'.

Choosing a good stock has become less about the basic underlying fundamentals of the company, and more about market sentiment related to the sector or markets as a whole, and it is this investing environment that pushes investors to seek returns elsewhere, whilst underwriting the value of a portion of their portfolio with capital assets like land or property.

Another good reason that interest in investment alternatives seems to be peaking, is the poor annuity rates offered to new pensioners by insurance companies. In every case, new pensioners are being forced to fix their incomes at a much lower rate than they had previously been able to do, causing many to readdress their future lifestyle choices and standard of living.

Currently, carbon credit is trading at 9 Euros as per benchmark EUA contracts, and according to analyst Lawson Steele, the price is set to reach a high by the End of the year.

Investors Need to Be Mindful of Hindsight

It's been a tough time for investors lately with the world's major sharemarkets struggling to produce any meaningful capital gain over the past five years.

The disappointment, though, goes deeper: since the start of this century the US sharemarket, measured by the S&P 500 Index, has fallen by 13 per cent, and that's before taking into account the erosion in value caused by inflation over that time.

In contrast to shares, world bonds have performed spectacularly well (up over 100 per cent) since 2000. The yawning gap in returns between bonds and shares doesn't depend on the starting point being 2000 either; you have to use more than two decades worth of (US) data before you can show that shares have delivered higher returns than bonds.

It's perhaps not surprising then that investors have shifted some of their funds away from shares and into bonds. According to data from over 40 countries compiled by the Association of US Investment Companies, investors have reduced their allocation to shares from almost 50 per cent at the end of 2006, to 39 per cent by the end of September 2011, and upped their allocation to bonds and money market investments.

In making the shift, of course, they have contributed to the downward pressure on shares prices and helped push up bonds.

There are at least three reasons behind many of world's savers shifting from shares to bonds over the past five or more years:

The obvious one is that bonds have simply delivered better returns than shares - in hindsight the shift in funds has been a no-brainer.

Value Investing and Value Stocks Explained

The value investor adheres to the principle of buying only undervalued stocks - undervalued in the sense that the stock's current price fails to reflect (as far as the investor is concerned) its 'fair' market price or its true 'intrinsic worth'. Famous advocates of the value investing philosophy include the legendary and very much alive investor Warren Buffet, and the late Benjamin Graham - one of the first proponents of value investing, a subject he taught as a professor at the Columbia Business School in 1928.

The overriding reason why value investors seek out undervalued stocks is because value stocks tend to offer a higher degree of capital preservation than growth stocks. Value investors are not so much concerned with how much they might make out of an investment, but how much of their capital they could lose - i.e.

Public Procurement As A Green Investment Incentive In EU Member States

On 18 January 2012, the Irish Government announced its first Green Public Procurement Action Plan. And while there is already some criticism of the "Green Tenders" in cash-strapped Ireland, the action plan is a reminder that public procurement has an environmental side as well since it is a way to promote environmentally friendly enterprises and stimulate more sustainable production. And, according to the EU Environmental Commissioner, green public procurement (GPP) also plays an important role in EU efforts to become a more resource-efficient economy.

Generally, GPP refers to the selection of products, works and services with a reduced environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.

Mangrove forests are ecosystems existing in saline coastal sediment habitats in the tropics and subtropics. They comprise various kinds of trees and shrubs, as well as fern and palm species, all adapted to survival between land and sea.

Investing In An Inflationary Market With A Declining Dollar

Investing in stocks and commodities can be a wise idea to grow your portfolio over the course of time, however there can be tumultuous times that can have your portfolio decline dramatically as in the case of the financial collapse of 2008. Those times are over and the S&P is right near its old highs and the Nasdaq composite is at 11 year highs and the commodity markets have rallied tremendously in the last couple of years. The main rule here is to stick it out even through the rough times and remember this is long term investing and should be treated in that fashion.

One main concern with investors in America is the fact that the dollar continues its bearish trend and continues to decline over time due to government printing money and several stimulus packages which have not worked and has ballooned the debt to over $15 trillion dollars which is at an all-time high.

The first group of people spend much of their income on things that lose value over time. Examples include most cars, recreational vehicles, toys, consumables, and entertainment.

Making Use Of Abandoned Farmland With Ethical Investments

The problem of abandoned farmland exists in many countries for a range of different reasons. For example, agricultural land could have been abandoned on the basis of soil erosion or productivity loss, often the result of over-exploitation and unsustainable agricultural management.

Trust Deed Investing: A Safer Bet

Many people consider investing money in stocks or trust deeds but are unsure of how to go about it. Previously investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds seemed a safe gamble for most to make with their hard earned money since it leads to increased net worth over time which gives them more future security and a safe retirement plan

With the economic downturn that the United States and the entire world are currently experiencing, many individuals find themselves in a place where their retirement is now in question. The previous ability to work for a company and then retire has seemingly burst under the housing and real estate collapse, with many people finding themselves without their safety net of employment security or even without their homes.

Because of this, most average individuals believe that the idea of investing is too far out of reach, a distant dream that is now a sign of times past where rewards were given to those that worked the hardest and the longest.

Investing in ETFs

For example, by buying shares of the DBS Singapore STI ETF you are effectively investing in the 30 stocks (ie, Singapore Telecommunications, Wilmar International, DBS Group, etc) that are tracked by the STI (Straits Times Index).

Like other funds (Unit Trusts, Mutual Funds, etc), ETFs invest in a portfolio of stocks, thus providing you, as the investor, access to a wide range of markets, sectors and asset classes. Unlike unit trusts, however, ETFs are listed on stock exchanges and are subject to brokerage commissions, just like shares on stock exchanges.

Your Primary Keys to Diversification

Diversification based on your age is often cited as critical yet this is extremely fraught with misconceptions. Diversification is absolutely critical to a good investment plan but it should be based on a number of factors, not just your age.

Age based diversification is just another way of saying, "I think I am going to live a long time" or "I don't have much time left." Or it's like a batter coming up against Nolan Ryan or Greg Maddux with either an "oh well" attitude or an "I can hit this guy" attitude.

Some of the keys to diversification are:

• Term: are your investments for the long-term, short-term, mid-term or a mix?

But don't confuse these "terms" with how long you will be investing; rather they are terms that describe how long you typically expect to hold a position (stock, ETF or fund). If you are going to trade daily then long-term positions are not very likely.

Don’t Be Swayed, Stick With Your Plan

Once you have an investment plan, a solid, proven winner for an investment plan; it is important, if not critical that you stick with it.

A good plan is just like preparing dinner:

• Figure out what you wanto Stocks, ETFs or funds• Check the ingredientso Which group of stocks or funds or ETFs• Do some research for the best recipeo Method of Analysiso Back test to find the best strategies• Prep timeo How much time do you have to develop your strategies• Cooking timeo How much time and how often to manage your investmentso Minutes or hours a day or a week or even just monthly

Consistency in an investment plan doesn't mean buy something until someone dies: you or the stock.

Consistency in an investment plan means developing a plan based on a recognized means of analysis like relative strength momentum or alpha with a variety of tested sell signals and perhaps even a signal for when it is time to take a pause and exit the markets entirely.

If you create a plan with half a dozen different groups and for each group you have two or three strategies you will achieve both diversification and a strong degree of safety.

Now you have an investment plan you can stick with. Why? Because:

• It is based on your personality• It is formed with your time constraints in mind• It is aimed directly at your own objectives• It consists of stocks or ETFs or funds that you are willing to consider (yes you can add more groups whenever you want)• It has strategies back tested for both buying and selling

It is important in creating your groups to settle on not just one but to have two or three trading/selling strategies for each group. Why?

Experience says that instead of going with just one strategy for each group, narrow your back testing down to two or three strategies.

The Elliott Wave Theory And The Predictability Of Human Psychology

For anyone with even a passing interest in stock markets and trading the name Ralph Nelson Elliott is usually a very familiar one. An accountant working at the turn of the last century Elliott's theory, known as the Elliott Wave Theory, proposed that stock market trends and patterns were, to a certain degree, all very much the same.

If you take one stock market chart for something like oil, and you remove all information relating to any timeframe or values, and you place this next to a trading chart for something completely different, what you will notice is that they share significant similarities.

The reason for this, so Elliott Wave Theory suggests, is that stock markets are heavily controlled by human psychology, and human psychology is fairly predictable. For example, if you tell someone not to think of a pink elephant they'll be unable to do anything but picture such a thing, and if you offer to show someone your holiday photos they'll suddenly recall an urgent appointment.

Re-Thinking Wealth Building

An article was recently published by Reuters entitled: "The New American Dream is Renting to Get Rich." The thesis of this article is that home ownership is not the fast-track to wealth that it used to be. It also makes the point that many people would be better off renting and investing their surplus income in wealth-building investments than by sinking all of their income into owning a home. The article also went on to explain how many people who had purchased homes during the boom lacked the financial resources to pay for building wealth through other investments, and became solely dependent on their home equity for their net worth.

This serves as an excellent backdrop for a deeper discussion on what wealth really is, and what wealth building is really about.

Alternative Income Investments – Proper Due Diligence Required

In the current economic climate, defined in part by low interest rates and high inflation, those approaching retirement age are being forced to reconsider their financial position, and seek alternatives to traditional investment investments.

In the past 20 years, annuity rates for UK pensioners have halved as life expectancy has increased whilst the yield on traditional fixed income investments made by pension funds has declined. A pension pot worth £100,000 would have been able to secure a pension income of £16,500 every year for life. Today, the same size pot will secure an income of only £6,500 a year.

As concerns of future income and cost of living grow, many are choosing to take a tax free lump sum, and invest in alternative assets that generate income which is not reliant on the performance of financial markets or interest rates.

The True Value of Investing

And you can have your spot under the shade too - through careful and prolific investments.

Making investments means putting your money in something that would make it grow. Simply put, it's also equivalent to making your hard-earned money work for you. Unlike saving your money in a bank, investing is focused more on getting returns.

Advice From Professionals Is Your First Step Towards Lucrative Gains in Property Investment

Purchasing an investment property is a big decision and one you have undoubtedly made with a view of benefiting from this purchase at a later date. Your decision to be a landlord for a rental property should not be a short term investment. There are costs associated with the purchase and sale of properties and to make it worthwhile, you will need to hold on to your investment long enough to cover the costs and make a healthy gain when you eventually sell.

The idea behind the purchase of an investment property is that the property will be rented out which helps with the ability to finance the investment and that during this time, the property will appreciate resulting in a profit when the time comes to sell.

Australia provides taxpayers with the opportunity to benefit from negative gearing aspects associated with investment properties which can assist in the decision to being a landlord in the rental market a worthwhile option and exciting venture.

To have a positive experience in owning investment property ensure that you seek expert advice from professionals who have your best interest in mind.

Which to Buy: Stocks, ETFs or Funds?

Where should you put your investment money? There are three basic choices for growing your money or building your retirement fund: stocks, mutual funds and ETFs.

Your choice depends upon a number of factors based primarily upon your willingness to accept risk, the risk of losing, your time to manage your investments and, of course, your desire for growth, for profits.

How you choose to invest, where to place your money, doesn't have to be exclusive to just one type or another; you can mix and match. Each of these four basic types has their own pluses and minuses:

• Stocks are the most well-known. Investing in stocks allows you to pick individual companies such as Ford (F) or Apple (APPL).

Web Design Tips to Improve Lead Generation

Improved lead generation starts with the bare bones foundations of your site: web design. Putting it simply, if the design of your website is clumsy or misguided, it will undermine any efforts you put in to improve online lead generation.

Effective web design has to have a core message that is driven by clear-cut goals for your website and individual program pages. Once you've defined these goals (and it can be anything from clicking on certain links, requesting more information or booking a tour to visit the campus), the next step is designing navigation and layout that is clear, clean and conducive to achieving your goals.

Above all, the design of your website should:

Investors Behaving Emotionally – The 7 Key Mistakes To Avoid

Today I want to look at how emotions can influence an investor when making decisions on their investments.

This subject has been discussed in depth over the years and is now known as Behavioural Finance. Essentially, the concept behind this is that whenever emotions get involved, investors can get hurt (not physically, of course!).

As long ago as 1934, Graham Benjamin, author of "Security Analysis", said:

"The investor's chief problem, and even his worst enemy, is likely to be himself"!

So what are the main mistakes that investors make when they let themselves be ruled by emotion? Well, there are quite a few.

Let's look at some of the main ones:

1. Hanging On To Poor Performing Shares

Some people simply hang on to losers! This is to do with loss aversion when they don't want to sell as they hate admitting they were wrong.

Who’s in Control of Your Investment Money?

Is your destiny, your financial future controlled by you, a family member, a financial person chosen by you or a total stranger?

In other words: Who's in control of your investments, or your retirement account, of your MONEY?

These can be scary questions especially if you think you are not qualified to manage your own retirement account, create one or invest in the stock market. The truth is, I believe almost every single person can manage their financial future. Perhaps you need a little assistance, but you can not only do it, but probably do it better than almost anyone else.

Controlling your financial future involves just a few key factors:

• Time - are you willing to spend 30 minutes a week, perhaps an hour managing and developing your financial future? Your retirement account?

Yes, this means finding 30 minutes almost every week, perhaps skipping a TV show, but the reward is equivalent to paying yourself the "big bucks".

• Method - invest some initial time to review software that can aid you with recommendations for what stocks, ETFs or mutual funds to buy and when; plus equally important when to sell and especially critical, when you should sell out and stay out of the stock market to preserve and protect your money.

The software should be flexible enough to meet your goals, your personality -conservative - moderate - aggressive.

Preferably the software shouldn't require months to learn or even a college degree.

With Investments, Time Teaches Well

And then, how, through the first few years of ups and downs, which, by the way, have happened to even the best of investors, you slowly learned to rein-in your emotions and dissociate them from the market. It's what I call seasoning; think of it as experiencing all of the seasons of the stock market, directly in your own portfolio, over a span on time, and it wizens you to the market over time. Well, that's what I broadly plan to touch on today; that success in investing is more than looking at prices jumping around on your computer monitor, more than a sexy story or puff piece, but a skill that is developed over time and by avoiding folly.

I'll touch on three topics.

Fixed Rate Bonds in a Volatile Market

Are fixed rate bonds a wise option for your investment portfolio in 2012? With savings account rates scraping the bottom of the barrel, and an increasingly unpredictable stock market, fixed rate bonds can provide a happy medium for those seeking a little bit more for their money without the degree of risk associated with stock market investment - but are the fixed rates a problem?

When you purchase a fixed rate bond you receive a set rate of interest across a pre-agreed period of time in return for the loan of your capital. The fixed period is usually between 6 months and 5 years.

Your fixed interest rate is usually guaranteed unless the bond provider goes bust. The value of your capital is not normally guaranteed, so you may not get back the full amount of capital you put in.

Fixed rate bonds will often provide very competitive rates when compared to traditional savings accounts, so if you were to base your decision on current interest rates investing in fixed rate bonds can look like a very good option indeed.

What worries many is that when you take out a fixed rate bond you will usually have to make a commitment for a certain period of time.
