We have all been taught about the merits of diversification in investments. It is a variation of the old adage, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Indeed, professional investment managers are trained to develop portfolios according to the tenets of Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT). MPT traces its roots to the work of Harry Markowitz and his seminal writings on "Portfolio Selection." In his pioneering research, Markowitz was able to demonstrate the mathematical basis for diversification.

Essentially, Markowitz showed that selecting assets that have a positive expected return but exhibit low or (preferably) negative correlation to one another produces a combined portfolio that retains the positive expected return properties, but with lowered risk (as defined by variance).

Theoretically, this result arises due to the presence of at least two major sources of risk: nonsystematic (or unique) risk and systematic (or market) risk.

When starting a business or making plans to increase and expand a business there are certain guidelines that should be followed to ensure the changes in growth are coming at the right time, and that fiscally, the business owner is responsible for managing the acquisition of new equipment and keeping costs within tolerances that the business can handle. Through capital planning investment control business owners can look ahead to see the needs of their growing enterprise and calculate the appropriate time to make new acquisitions or expand their employee base without putting a strain on the organizations finances.

By following a business and marketing plan organizations are able to prepare a roadmap with specific goals and benchmarks that are design to outline the growth and success of a company. Regardless of the industry or the enterprise capital planning investment control examines the available resources of a company and makes recommendations as to loans and leases for equipment and the plots the advantageous approach to business so that successful incorporation of the business plan will be in line to meet the set forth goals and objectives of the organization in a responsible and timely manner.

By consulting with specific partners and financial advisors the business, government agency, or non-profit organization can establish and meet their goals for the development of their organization within the capital planning investment control restrictions that have been set up to keep the enterprise moving in the direction that the owner and board of directors sees for their future.

The Child Trust Fund scheme sees parents of new born children receive a £250 CTF voucher from the government to invest on behalf of their children, and then receive another £250 voucher when their child turns seven.
Twenty years ago, just prior to the 1990 recession, I wrote a little booklet for my subscribers which I titled 'Bear Markets Are Best'. Its premise was not that bear markets are really better than bull markets, but that they are not something to be feared, and do have some advantages over bull markets. The same goes for corrections within bull markets.

For instance, if you position for them in a timely manner, not just by moving to cash to avoid losses, but to downside positions that go up when the market goes down, the profits can come faster than they do in rallies and bull markets.

That's because the market moves down much faster in corrections than it moves up in rallies.

For instance, in the 1990 bear market the S&P 500 lost the gains of the previous 15 months in just four months of decline.

The term options trading refers to buying securities like currencies at a particular time with an idea of reselling it when its price increases. If dealt carefully and attentively, this kind of trading can help you earn large income. Option is basically a contract between the seller and the buyer of the asset such as stocks.

If you are like most people on the planet, you covet your positive investment returns and are scared to death that you might give up those returns in this tough market climate. I believe this is why a majority of individual investors missed some or all of the recent stock market ascent off the March 2009 lows and 60%+ move higher.

I think this is why a November 2009 survey of high net worth investors by Investment News, showed that only a slim portion of the wealthy feel in control of their financial lives, an even smaller number (fewer than 9%) enjoy thinking about financial matters and only about a quarter feel successful in investing.

So what is the secret to feeling better about your investments and protecting your portfolio from Mr. Market's bears? The answer is to have a plan to identify and hedge your portfolio when market conditions clearly show a change in market direction may be coming.

This is where trend following shines.

Tucker & Cowen Solicitors have been recently engaged by the liquidators of Storm Financial Limited, one of the largest financial services companies in Australia.

In 2008, Storm Financial Limited ("Storm") was a company with some 14,000 clients under investment advice, well over a billion dollars of funds under management, and as at 30 June 2008 had an audited net profit of approximately $28 million.

By 9 January 2009, administrators had been appointed to the company, clients were threatening law suits for substantial losses, over $500 million in equity for clients had been wiped out and the business was insolvent and in ruins. Over $100 million in claims have been submitted to the liquidator for consideration at this time, and the assets seem unlikely to discharge the main secured banks' indebtedness let alone meet any of the claims of unsecured creditors.

Tucker & Cowen Solicitors have been engaged by the liquidators, Messrs Khatri and Worrell of Worrells Solvency & Forensic Accountants, to investigate the collapse of the company and to assist in its winding up.

As is now well known, throughout 2008, share markets worldwide suffered significant downturns, the greatest seen since the Great Depression of the early 1930s. Storm was a financial advising company, whose principal strategy consisted of "gearing" by borrowing against real estate or other assets to invest in managed index funds, and then defer the gear up against that investment by taking out margin loans.

Binary option is a one of the simple and common type of derivatives, where the payoff is either a certain amount of prescribed cash, called cash-or-nothing option, or shares, called asset-or-nothing option. Intuitively, cash-or-nothing option holders receive cash if the option finishes in the money, asset-or-nothing option holders receive shares of asset if in the money, thereafter binary options are often named as digital options.

The pricing of binary options is straightforward under GBM framework, the widely used Black Scholes formula can be easily adopted for its valuation. Once we understand the principle and know how to price it, the next step probably is to trade the products in financial markets.

How would you feel if you could do that?

And what if those dividends were 100% tax-free...

Wouldn't that be great!

And what if you didn't need to invest a single cent to the full benefits...Are you interested?

Okay, so you've heard the saying "if it sounds too good to be true... it probably is" On most occasions I'd agree. But, for this very special investment I make an exception.

As you probably know the Japanese stock and real estate bubbles preceded ours by a few years, and they've been mired in a no growth/slow growth economy ever since.

Could it happen here? Is it already happening? Certainly questions no one can answer with certainty. The real question is are we ready for such a scenario? What steps can we take to handle and even prosper from such an outcome?

Some would say stock up on canned goods, TP and ammo. Others scoff at such an event ever happening in the good ole USA.

I guess I'm somewhere between those two camps.

We've all heard the phrase "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". However, when it comes to investing, how many of you follow this useful piece of advice. I'm sure that across the country, people are having conversations in pubs, coffee shops, offices and factories which invariably include the phrase, "If I were you, I'd invest in 'X'" ( You can replace X with whatever asset is in fashion at the time and has included property, shares, gilts and bonds at various times ).

However, is investing in one asset type and chasing the market for the 'next big thing' the best possible approach? Many professional independent financial advisers adopt a different approach which involves spreading your money over a range of different investment types (or spreading your eggs over a number of different baskets).

According to a November 2009 survey of high net worth investors by Investment News, 99% of wealthy individuals and almost 90% of mega-millionaires felt that their financial situation is somewhat worse or much worse than their peers.

Now why would this be the case? One answer comes to mind, the wrong approach to their investments. It was too easy during the 1980s and 1990s to hire an investment advisor or manager and get market like returns with little downside volatility.

ETFs have many similarities to stocks:

Bought and sold on a stock exchange
Can be traded during trading hours
Their prices can change throughout the day
Are bought through brokerage accounts on and offlineThey also have many differences from stocks:
They have a basis in securities
Already offer diversification to a portfolio
You can buy a whole portfolio in just one ETF
Most often have less volatilityETFs: The Alternative to Mutual Funds

Timing: Mutual prices can change from the time you choose to buy to the time the price is calculated at the end of the day.

What do college students with brilliant ideas, entrepreneurs with revolutionary products ready for expansion, and veteran business people with substantial assets and a history of financial performance that exceeds current levels have in common? The common thread among these innovators is that they are not able to obtain financing through traditional lenders such as banks.

Some might say that businesses in this category are living on a wing and a prayer. Others might say that what they need is a guardian angel. Fortunately there are groups of investors that have banded together to profit from investing in promising businesses that are not yet attractive to banks or venture capitalists.

"Appropriately, these investors are known as Angels"

Angel investment plays a vital role in the financial enablement of incubation level businesses like start-ups and those that are ready to emerge from business incubators like Innovation Pointe.

So firstly lets look at the different modes of agricultural investment that are available for retail investors.

Agricultural Investment Funds
Direct Farm Ownership- Hands On
Direct Farm Ownership - Hands Off

First we look at Agriculture Investment Funds. These managed investment vehicles - available under the banner of most major investment houses - operate in the same way as other types of investment fund, gathering together the capital of smaller investors and participating in larger transactions such as buying up 1,000´s of hectares of managed farmland in various countries and essentially positioning themselves as very large global farm owner operators.

As a consultant who has taken many companies public on the OTCBB (Over The Counter Bulletin Boards), consulted on even more and turned around and structured more companies I can even count, there are a few common threads inherent in all of them.

Most of the companies pursuing capital from angel investors, private investors, private equity firms or small groups of professionals looking for a quick in and out situation with rapid capitalization did three things that made all the difference in streamlining their raise.

First the executives structured their entity to attract investors which by default strengthened their corporate infrastructure. Now they are proposing investment opportunities from more of a position of strength.

Second they chose a team (in these cases they chose our consulting firm) with a proven track record of success with organizing companies for acquisition, merger and taking companies public.

The third element that is common in most successful enterprises which are seeking a first round of seed capital to fund their 'going public' ambitions is demonstrating confidence to the investor with a "selling shareholder offering". Obviously this last element tests the skill of the consultants going back and forth with the SEC during the comments stage but this demonstrates confidence and organization by the company wishing to raise capital.

A 'selling shareholder offering' tells the investor (if not purely in the initial documents then in the phone conferences leading up the a check being cut) that the company has an organized pre-public and post public investor relations strategy, general corporate publicity strategy and a market maker that's built to last (mostly the former than the later).

This is one of those questions I hear from people new to options trading all the time and not an easy question to answer in my opinion. Sure, options trading can create millionaires and many, including myself, have made more an a million trading options. However, can options trading turn YOU into a millionaire?

In a way, asking this question is as good as asking questions like:

Can trading stocks turn you into a millionaire?

Can trading futures turn you into a millionaire?

Can trading Forex turn you into a millionaire?

Can selling burgers turn you into a millionaire?

Can collecting coins turn you into a millionaire?

The answer to all of these questions is a resounding, YES.

The problem is, can YOU become a millionaire doing these things that have made OTHER people millionaires?

First of all, let's ascertain the theoretical possibility of making a million through options trading.

If you've been disappointed by the low interest rates offered on CDs or checking accounts recently, you might want to look into social lending.

Social lending is a new investment opportunity that matches individual lenders with individual borrowers. Platforms like Lending Club and Prosper cut out the complexity and overhead of traditional banks to offer better returns to investors and lower rates to borrowers.

How good are the rates for investors? Well, I'm currently averaging a 13.77% annual return on my investments at Lending Club and the average return there is over 9% for all investments since 2007.

Your personal rate of return there can vary significantly based on the types of loans you choose.

Here's how social lending works for investors. First, you open an account online and deposit funds (typically $1000 is the minimum).

There are plenty of different trading styles out there for every kind of options trader, whether they are conservative or aggressive. So when it comes to trading option spreads, which style of trading suits your potential better as an options trader, selling a spread and receiving an upfront credit for your trade while accommodating risk, or buying a spread on a debit and receiving the potential to multiply your gains? If you don't know and you'd like to figure it out, ask yourself a couple of simple questions before you decide to go with one strategy or the other.

Do you prefer gathering your gains upfront with a higher chance that you will make money but a lower potential for profit? If you are the kind of trader who likes to trade with probability on your side, then credit spreads are most definitely for you. Credit spreads typically rely on making a profit when every leg of the spread expires worthless.

To help you make sense of the bulls and the bears, this article compiles definitions of each type of market as well as what they mean to investors and their investments.

Agricultural investment has outperformed traditional asset classes such as stocks, bonds and cash for some time, a fact backed by the sound fundamentals backing agricultural investments.

The world population is growing, with most experts predicting a growth of 40% by 2050, and a correlated growth in demand for food of at least 50%. This, combined with the diminishing supply of agricultural land is pushing up the value of agricultural land at an annual average of more than 18% over the last three years.

Here's an interesting fundamental fact driving agricultural investments: The current commitments to biofuel use from the USA, EU, Japan, China, Canada, and India, would use up around 440 million acres, that´s all of the agricultural land in North America and 11% of the worlds farmland. This demand will continue to pressure output, and put agricultural land at a premium.

So, what could be considered the best agricultural investment? Well the options for investor are two-fold, firstly you could invest in one of the many agricultural funds available on the market, these agricultural funds offer the investor the opportunity to participate at lower levels and enjoy the lower risk element of spreading their investment over a vast portfolio of crops and locations.

The other option, and this is what I personally consider to be the best agricultural investment, involves a direct investment into agricultural land.

The cushion bond - a callable bond trading at a premium to par value - offers the potential for higher return in a low rate environment, while providing protection against the potentially damaging consequences of future rate increases.

Most investors know that bond prices move inversely to changes in interest rates (i.e. when rates increase, bond prices fall).

Everyone has heard about a friend of a friend who knew a guy that had a sister who got involved with a company just before they went public, made a small seed investment and when the company went public she made millions.

Real Pre - Public investments in companies that are built to last with solid executive management and board of directors all wrapped in a industry that can still flourish in a recession are extremely difficult to find and impossible to be part of unless you are 'in the know', meaning you are the auditing or contract attorney for the company filing with the SEC, the accounting firm doing the third party audit, the consulting firm who is putting together the corporate strategies for the company or the investor relations industry that is gearing up for the publicity and promotions campaign to run in a post offering environment.

Typically the invitation to invest in a pre-public company comes in the form of a Direct Public Offering after the company is divided into shares with a private placement memorandum and before the third party audit and before and during the comments stage of the S1 filing. If you are fortunate enough to invest in a company with the above description you will most likely being offered deeply discounted stock (cheaper than what will be offered in the public market) which means you will (if the offering goes as planned) increase your initial investment amount by 200+ percent.

This is not at all a rare instance. Getting invited to invest in the pre-public, seed capital stage is actually quite simple if you know who to talk to.

Forestry investment has outperformed most other assets for the last 30 years, providing consistent returns averaging 15% per annum over the last decade. Institutional investors like Jeremy Grantham have been using forestry as an effective inflation hedge for years (Grantham even holds 20% of his personal investment portfolio in Forestry), and an investment of £1 million into a managed forest in 1990 would be worth on average £16,366,537 today in 2010 (tax free in most countries too!).

So what is the best forestry investment, and how can smaller investors, who maybe don´t have access to £1 million, participate in forestry investment and take advantage of the low risk, high returns that have been enjoyed by institutional investors for decades?

There are many structures available for smaller investors, with options from Teak to Argawood, through to Paulownia and even bamboo, and there are also various locations to choose from covering most continents and all economies from frontier markets to developed economies. Choosing which type of forestry investment is for you will depend on how long you want to tie up your cash (tree type), and your attitude to political risk (where your forest is located).

After conducting some extensive due diligence on the harvest times of different timber types and their historical price performance and forward looking demand, and also settled on where you are, and are not, happy to invest, you can start to narrow down your selection of investment projects.

Deal Structure for Smaller Investors

Smaller investors can participate in forestry by buying or leasing a small part, maybe a hectare or three, of a much larger managed forest of maybe 1000 hectares.

Many times it seems that only those closely affiliated with broker dealers, market makers and mergers and acquisitions consultants keep the juicy and ultra-lucrative information to themselves.

So if you're an investor who wants in, how do you claim your golden key for access to this world of instant liquidity, deeply discounted stock and massive return on investment? The first thing you shouldn't do is pay for it. When finding solid companies in need of quick seed capital to complete the public process, the last thing a company like this is going to do is charge you to see their business plan and PPM.

I have seen several times where companies or individuals claiming to have direct access to these pre-IPO companies will charge a membership fee for access to the opportunity.

Covered calls are a conservative option trade that typically outperforms standard stock trading strategies in the majority of markets. The reason is because covered calls draw out profits from speculators while collecting a premium on the trade and holding onto the stock for dividends. Since you have multiple sources of profit in the trade, you have the opportunity to make money when the stock goes up, down or sideways.

For those who don't already know, writing a covered call involves buying 100 shares of stock and then selling the call option on those 100 shares 1 or 2 strikes out of the money in the front month.

How would you like to be a "seed" investor in a new fully reporting publicly traded company on the Over the Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB) at a discount to the market? How would you like to have "liquidity" in your investment? How would you like to have a built in "exit strategy"? How would you like to have an opportunity to spread your risks among three or four promising opportunities rather than one?

Here is how this can be done. Skip the cliché route of getting investment tidbits from your broker; it's rare that they actually have specific details about these hush, hush scenarios and most likely couldn't put you in touch with the executives of the pre-public structure which is obviously a mandatory prerequisite for investing seed capital in these companies. Your best bet is to find a consultant or consulting firm who specializes in complete facilitation of going public.

Securities arbitration results from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ("FINRA") Office of Dispute Resolution reporting the outcomes of customer initiated investment related arbitrations against stockbrokers and investment firms have been released for 2009.

Not surprisingly, the number of FINRA customer initiated arbitration cases filed in 2009 increased 43% from 4,982 cases in 2008 to 7,137 cases in 2009. The number of these cases was initially expected to exceed 10,000 in 2009. Increases in securities prices in the 2009 have probably reduced the number of claims that would otherwise have been filed last year, given Wall Street's more recent misconduct, as the high tide conceals that the swimmers are wearing no clothes.

Last years filings are still behind the number of presumably "tech-wreck" related annual filings in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

It is the best income in the world because it comes in automatically, without any major involvement on our part. (Although we have to do the initial hard work for generating it).

Here we discuss some of the ways of generating Passive income.

1) Real Estate

When one has a piece of Income producing Real Estate (One which you own and have given out on rent), then it can be considered a superb source of income.

The biggest concern for investors is the potential for loss of their capital. Most of these types of 'guaranteed' or 'protected' investments will be sold via the high street in banks. They are typically marketed to those who have an aversion to risk, or as I prefer to say it, where the financial adviser neither explains risk or cannot explain risk.

Scams such as platform based funding, banking instrument collateralized lending, shelf corporation scams and on and on. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to some of the venture capital and private equity industry's talented global finance executives who have decided enough is enough.

Now entrepreneurs are seeing professional collective funding efforts put forth by these seasoned finance gurus in the form of online membership databases which possess some of the best kept secrets in the global funding markets. Many of these databases include finance companies and methods that have never been available to the public and were used for decades by VC professionals who were able to pull off funding miracles on behalf of clients and in return made hefty commissions.

Now, with these unique contacts being placed in database form they are now available to everyone and anyone who needs capital.

I've found it particularly useful to show my private investors one of Einstein's favorite things - and this really drives a strong point home while loosening up their checkbook.

What am I talking about? What was Einstein's favorite thing?

Compound interest.

Einstein was quoted as "compound interest is the greatest invention in human history."

Raising capital for a start-up, corporation in expansion mode or a company in virtually any position presents it's challenges and roadblocks. There has been no period in recent history that can simulate the difficulties that current entrepreneurs and executives are having when trying to achieve the procurement of venture capital. The standards have become more stringent and the cross-collateralization of personal and corporate assets as security for loans has virtually become a mandatory prerequisite for any type of funding, equity or loan based.

When initiating the process of raising capital one should take into consideration the use of a combination of funding options such as but not limited to: traditional venture capital, bank institutional, institutional equity investment, hedge fund lenders, private money lending, angel equity and loan investment, a private placement memorandum as the mechanism for raising capital distributed in shares, international equity based funding, the reality of taking your small business public on the OTCBB and many other concepts of capital raising that can be placed into a simultaneous strategy.

It's a common mistake among entrepreneurs and executives to place all of their attention and time into one singular aspect of the above funding concepts.

Big Rock Candy Mountains

This song described a place so wonderful, yes even perfect, to this kid as it played on the radio decades ago. For those who don't recall; the song is about a place where "...a bum could stay for many a day, and he won't need any money..." Here's part of a verse for old times sake: "... Oh I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow, where the rain don't fall, the wind don't blow in the Big Rock Candy Mountains..."

So why is an investment adviser writing about some old song? It's part of our human nature to want an 'ideal' place or existence.

The active options trader's world

When I say I'm an active options trader, I mean that I regularly enter options trades in various forms, mostly spreads (see my article on premium selling strategies for more on this).

We devote more than 20 years in education, study millions of pages but none teach us the most important lesson of our life, how to become financially rich. One may be academically a genius but that does not guarantee his financial intelligence, because neither in school nor in our homes are we taught the theories of becoming rich. What is the problem, why are people ignore teaching their children the most important thing of life? From our childhood we have heard our parents saying "study hard and get a good job".

A lot of public attention has been given to gold lately: especially in light of the current devaluation of the dollar and the skyrocketing price of this precious metal. --If gold is your primary attraction, coins are not always the best choice

If your primary interest is using gold as an investment, most experts agree that bullion coins are the way to go.

In truth the value of sports mementos in the area of football has increased fantastically since Bret Farve has made his comeback with the Minnesota Vikings.

There were lots of other sportsmen who have made and left their mark on a selected sport. But even with that being said, experienced marketers, use their abilities and knowledge to make something for everybody even if it is no more than a key chain.
