Institutional investors are a segment of the market consisting of traders who make large trades that qualify them for preferential treatment with a broker. This can include lower commissions and fewer regulations that dictate their market participation. Examples of institutional investors are pension funds and other types of large entities that buy quantities of shares in bulk amounts.

This type of investor can buy shares in many types of market products that include individual stocks, various types of bonds and specific commodities.

Most investors want to enjoy the high, longterm returns provided by equities, but they can't stomach the volatility of the stock market. In the bear market of 2008, the S&P 500 lost 60% of its value. This is too much for people who need to rely on their investment portfolios for retirement.

GOAL/ OBJECTIVE:

To provide longterm gains that beat the market averages with less volatility than the overall market, and significantly less draw down during bear market corrections.

BASIC APPROACH:

Use low cost, unleveraged, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that track the broad market indices as investment vehicles.

When most people think of investments, they typically think of trading stocks and shares on the stock exchange - and this is the form of investment that most investors tend to engage in. However, if you are looking to diversify your investment portfolio or make a start in investing in something of a different way, there are some great options open to you.

One of these is wine investment. The wine market is currently much more buoyant than the economy more generally, so even though the market did suffer something of a fall last year, it has recently picked up again and is still up more than 50% compared to where it was in 2007.

Whatever your circumstances are right now step up and start doing something different from today. It is a common mistake to wait for when the time is right, or when you have some spare money you will start investing, as David Bach points out in his best selling book The Automatic Millionaire The Pay Yourself First Rule is the first rule to start implementing and the sooner you start the better.

Start investing at least 30 minutes a day of your time on raising your financial IQ and even if you have £1.00 a day right now to invest with just do it this habit alone has the power to transform your future.

The day before Thanksgiving many of us will be preparing our homes to receive guests, or making the trek to a friend, or relatives gathering.

But the 23rd of November is D-day for the congressional debt committee.

There are many factors to consider:

Will Greece's economy fail, causing them to no longer have credit whereby having to move to an all cash system?

What will be the outcome of the Italian issue, and its subsequent effect on the global economy?

There are many questions, with speculations disguised as answers.

The bigger question, what are you going to do about your situation? Your personal finances are just as important as the global economy because you are a part of that same deteriorating economy.

What are some of the ways you plan to protect the money you currently have from the future impending inflation, and will you still gain interest on your money? Will it be enough to either live off of, or will you use it to build for the future?

With the rocking and rolling of the stock market, should you place your money in bonds? But didn't the analyst say the bond market is a bubble waiting to burst?

Should you move to tangible assets such as gold, silver, etc.?

Will futures be the new 'now' market for growing an income, or retirement portfolio?

What's happening with mutual funds?

The answer to all of these questions is everything has a cycle. Study the cycles and you may be able to predict an outcome.

The stock market currently appears to be in a sideways pattern and with a new cycle starting around the year 2016, but what type of cycle will it be?

Are we in for a Bull or Bear market future?

Only time can really tell.

All bubbles do burst eventually, the futures market may be having gains at this time of the year, and gold's value is through the roof and moving higher with silver riding its coattails. Mutual funds are currently stagnating, but some will gain with the shifts of the S and P.

Real Estate is still a viable consideration for investing, if done wisely.

An investment fund is a type of investment vehicle used to invest in the stock market. An investment fund is where the investor contributes a sum of money into that fund, which has already been invested into certain areas of the stock market. The idea is to minimise the risk by spreading the amount invested into several areas of the stock market at once.

This has the following advantages:

· Minimises risk to the investor as the fund will be configured to buy stocks and shares in different commodities.

· Can be configured on the basis of risk, so the more adventurous may look for a high risk, high return fund, while a more cautions investor may look for a low risk, low return fund.

· Avoids the scenario of putting your eggs in one basket, which many financial people would advise against doing.

· They are good for the inexperienced investor as they invest in many areas of the market.

It is worth remembering that stocks can do well one year and perform poorly the next.

Investment funds still require key decisions to be made, especially in the area of risk.

What constitutes a lucrative investment strategy really depends on you as an individual investor - what can be considered lucrative to some is low yield to others, but there are certain common elements.

Appetite for riskIt goes without saying that the higher the potential profit or yield, the higher the risk there will be in a given investment. No investment is completely risk free, although some investments, like homes, bonds, and precious metals can certainly appear to be. We've all witnessed what a recession can do to even the most steadfast investments, so bear this in mind when considering in something previously regarded as bulletproof.

With a gloomy financial forecast, our savings and investments are now more important than ever and it pays to be clued up about the best saving products on the market.

THE BOND BASIC

Just as the public will find themselves in a position of needing to loan money at some point or another in their life (mortgages for example), companies and the government also occasionally need a financial lending hand.
Many people who are seeing low return on their savings accounts often look to other ways they can increase the returns on their hard earned cash. And why not, money does not grow on trees or anywhere else, and it is only natural that those hours of toil put in at the workplace should translate as a nice profitable return.

Subsequently, many people have looked at the stock market and its various investment vehicles as a way of making the money do the work. One method which is often favoured by all types of investors is investing via an investment fund.

Unless you have an exceptional insight into the stock market, investment funds offer a way of investing into the market without having to pick out individual stocks and shares, which unless you have a good insight into the markets and are a highly experienced player in the game, it is probably a good idea to avoid at least in the first instance.

Investing into an investment fund involves paying into a fund which is already invested into several areas of the market.

Individually Managed Accounts (IMAs) and Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs) both offer investors a highly transparent managed share portfolio while avoiding the tax distortions that come with pooled investment vehicles such as managed funds.

However, there are some important differences between individually and separately managed accounts and while they may sound very similar, these differences can have a significant impact on investment performance, suitability, and tax effectiveness.

In General, Separately Managed Accounts are a good alternative to managed funds for many investors, while investors with $1 million or more, are likely to find the features of an IMA more compelling.

Key differences between the two types of managed accounts rests in their approach to building an investment portfolio.

SMAs are constructed with a 'model portfolio' where each investor receives precisely the same portfolio, based on a template created by the fund manager. IMAs however, are constructed individually for each investor, although each account will share some common holdings. These two approaches have some important differences:

* Investors in a SMA may buy stocks that have already enjoyed most of their returns, but remain in the model portfolio to avoid realising capital gains tax.

The highest money market accounts are just one type among many that offer investors an option that has both flexibility and a decent possible return. Money market accounts (MMAs) are not among the highest paying accounts available at most banks, but because of the added flexibility and lessened restrictions on the use of the funds in the accounts, they can be a great option

Is a money market account really what I want

Usually, when an investor puts money in the bank to get a high rate of return, they will consider getting a Certificate of Deposit (CD).

The common piece of advice that all investors can agree on is the need to have a diversified portfolio. This basically means that an investor should not invest all his money in one field, one company or one form of investment. Investing exclusively in high risk stocks may seem like the best way to get rich quick but it is really setting an investor up for failure and loss of capital.

Hedge funds are a unique type of investment and you have to be able to meet their investing requirements before you can just dive in. Unlike other investment vehicles where you might be able to just start throwing money in, you have to be approved as a worthy investor in order for the fund to allow you to invest.

When you first start investing in hedge funds, you will usually have to fill out a worksheet that answers some of the most basic financial questions so that you can prove your value as an investor.

The BRIC countries consist of Brazil, Russia, India and China and this is a group of countries put forward as potential powerhouses of the future. But why would investing in China, the second largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and purchasing power, present above average risk?

The Chinese economy

The other day, I was at Starbucks and someone had their lottery tickets which they had just purchased, and they said they very much hope that they would win because they were worried they might lose their job, and they haven't saved enough yet for their retirement. In other words, their lottery ticket would be the winning ticket out of future poverty.

We got to talking about whether they should take the lump sum, or get a lifetime payout if they won the lottery. Indeed, this is rather hilarious, because the chances of that winning are about the same chances of getting struck twice by lightening, but they had already spent their two dollars to buy a couple of tickets, so we were just talking hypothetical.

It would appear to me with all the states on the verge of bankruptcy, and unable to pay the pension funds, that it would make sense to take a lump sum if you win the lottery rather than a lifetime payout.

Would you like to improve your financial position? Are you happy with your investment vehicles? There are many to choose from and most are well known but I would like to offer private lending for those investors who care to consider alternatives.

Private lending on real estate offers a relatively safe return on your money and the combination of safety and profit makes it the one of the best.

What makes a good investment for you? You certainly want to know if your money is somewhat safe and if the rate of return will be favorable. While no investment is 100% guaranteed safe, this vehicle is about as close as they come. If anyone guarantees you a totally safe return on an investment head for the door.

You want to know how much of your money will be required and what happens if an emergency comes up and you need to get your hands on your investment?

When you invest in the stock market or mutual funds you lose money if the bottom falls out, at least until you can sell.

If there's one timeless investing principal that trumps all others, diversification certainly ranks up there right at the top.

Ask 100 people on the street to describe what diversification means to them and you'll probably get 100 different answers. We all interpret things slightly differently, which is why it's important to lay down some clear definitions up front so we're all on the same page.

I'll start with the common misconception that diversification is about getting "better returns" - this isn't true.

Diversification is first and foremost about mitigating risk, not about producing better returns. The two aren't mutually exclusive, but it stands to reason that you have a better chance of getting a higher return on investment when you're willing to take on more risk.

And although it doesn't provide a guarantee against loss - as losses can and will occur - diversification is a key fundamental money management strategy that must be implemented in order to reach your long-range financial goals while minimizing risk.

If you study the investment patterns of families and their wealth that's survived over a period of many generations, you come to understand that diversification has a much deeper meaning for those who want to thrive in every possible economic and political situation that can arise.

The purpose of this article is to cover the most important aspects of accomplishing true diversification in your portfolio.

The term "portfolio" usually refers to a collection of investments that an individual owns.

In this new financial era inflation will reward borrowers who acquire appreciating assets using depreciating dollars, but disadvantage savers as the value of their money goes down over time. This will set the stage for another significant property boom as more investors will turn back to assets that store value, like residential property, which increases in value during inflationary times.

If the global financial crisis has taught us anything, it's that we need to start taking a different approach to money and how we value it, procure it and use it.

So back to the original question - what's going to be the best investment in the years ahead?

One thing is certain: there is no such thing as a perfect investment. If somebody tells you they have found "the perfect investment" be very sceptical and ask lots of question, because chances are they're trying to sell you something you just shouldn't buy.

The things I look for are:

· liquidity (the ability to take your money out by either selling or borrowing against your investment);· easy management;· strong, stable rates of capital appreciation;· steady cashflow;· a hedge against inflation; and· good tax benefits.

When you look at the major categories of investments, you will recognise that not many fit the bill when it comes to all five of these criteria.

The recent world financial crisis and the new era of money we have entered means that you're going to have to invest in assets that are both powerful and stable.

By powerful, I mean that to act as a hedge against inflation they must have the ability to grow at high, wealth producing rates of growth.

The Challenge

What would you do if one million dollars suddenly landed on your lap tax free? I can list down all the things I can buy and spend it on but here's another question you might not have thought of: How would you make One Million Dollars Grow?

I've read so many stories about successful people starting out with little more than a few dollars and had turned it into fortunes. What if you could start with a million? Would you have it easier? Could you turn it into five million, maybe ten or even a hundred? How would you do it?

I have been reading about Chinese culture lately and their method for investing struck me. The Chinese have a simple rule of what to do with a sudden windfall of cash that somewhat makes sense.

First we look at Agriculture Investment Funds. These managed investment vehicles - available under the banner of most major investment houses - operate in the same way as other types of investment fund, gathering together the capital of smaller investors and participating in larger transactions such as buying up 1,000´s of hectares of managed farmland in various countries and essentially positioning themselves as very large global farm owner operators.

You hear a lot of horror stories about fixed and index-linked annuities - mostly coming from sources that are biased, have a vested interest in trashing annuities or are just plain uninformed. Ironically, most of the stories (sometimes referred to as case studies) feature payout two-tier annuities and discuss these dogs as if all fixed annuities are two-tier.

A two-tier annuity is one that requires you to take your money out in installment payments over a period of time in order to get the full account value. Unfortunately, you are not guaranteed by the insurance company (very few insurance companies even offer payout two-tier annuities) a market rate of return during the installment payout period; therefore, you're trusting the insurance company to pay you a market rate and you can bet your next Social Security check that an insurance company that would issue a payout two-tier annuity can't be trusted to pay you a fair interest rate during the installment payout phase.

Smart investing includes risk management; however, most people focus on how much money they can make without paying attention to strategically analyzing risk. It is important for an investor to fully understand the concept of risk before embarking on an investment plan and to implement certain safeguards to ensure their success rate is increased.

In investment terms, risk is associated with the end of period value of the investment and the primary concern for any investor is a reduction in value of the original sum invested. There is no way of completely eliminating financial risk, even with the placement of assets in a bank account, therefore, a strategic investment plan should incorporate risk reduction techniques that have proven to create a greater opportunity of coming out ahead.

The most frequent techniques for reducing risk in investment are diversification, dollar cost averaging and time, and in order to better understand these areas we will expand upon their meaning and how they can be implemented.

Diversification

Diversification in finance mixes a wide variety of investments within a portfolio and can include investing in different markets, regions or countries.

Gold bullion is a horrible investment! Its real return is practically zero over the past 100 years! It's the investment "snuggie" of late night cable television!

I'm sure you've heard these statements before by popular investment gurus, who either don't understand or ignore the true value of investing in precious metals.

Putting aside the fact that gold has appreciated at double-digit rates on average this decade against all of the world's currencies and tripled in price over the past six years, let's look at the metal not as an investment vehicle but as an insurance policy against loss of purchasing power.

Peruse this idea for just a brief moment.

To protect your home against destruction, you purchase an insurance policy, right? Gold bullion is a form of financial insurance and should be regarded as so. Not as an investment but as insurance against the erosion of purchasing power caused by the declining dollar.

Dollar convertibility into gold ended on August 15th 1971, when President Richard Nixon forever closed the gold window. No longer tied to the gold standard, the U.S.

The term non-correlated asset classes covers a whole range of potential investments, including venture capital, real estate, private equity, and commodities, but also alternative investment strategies.

But in today's economy of crashing public equity markets, defaulting hedge funds, and non-existent real estate plays, one company believes investing in film slates, including theatrical distribution, offers a high yield alternative investment that can be leveraged with tax benefits and multiple sources of revenues including theatrical, DVD, video on demand, cable, and the foreign markets.

As a non correlated asset class, films and film finance has outperformed every non correlated asset class in the world if you look at the more than $6 billion dollars poured into motion picture finance deals in the last 3 years, the IRR across the spectrum for both studios and independents are resilient to global economic declines in other industries.

When defense contractor Honeywell, New York Hedge Fund Elliot Associates, and Dune Capital invested more than a combined total of more than a billion dollars towards several different film funds, many pension funds, private banks, hedge fund managers, private equity groups, and high net worth investors and family offices started to follow suit enter the movie business.

Investors from Wall Street to Silicon Valley to the Middle East to Russia have been parking their money into Hollywood.

Anil Ambani, Larry Ellison Of Oracle, Paul Allen Of Microsoft, Steven Rales, Fred Smith of Federal Express, Norman Waitt, the Co-Founder of Gateway Computers, Jeff Skoll Of Ebay, Marc Turtletaub of The Money Store, Roger Marino Of EMC Corp, Sidney Kimmel Of Jones Apparel Group, Minnesota Twins owner Bill Pohlad; Real Estate Developers Tom Rosenberg and Bob Yari, and, financiers Sheikh Waleed Al Ibrahim, Michel Litvak, and Philip Anschutz are all behind the finance of a lot of films that range from box office hits to Academy Award winners.

Institutional investors and hedge funds investing in films include Elliot Associate, Stark, Columbus Nova, Bain, Honeywell, and others.

Non-correlated investment strategies can be used by investors to neutralize, or counterbalance, the risk that one, or more, of the investments in a traditional portfolio of stocks and bonds falls in value. In order to do this, investors typically place between 5% and 20% of their total investment portfolio into alternative investments to protect the remainder of the portfolio from downside risk.

Among the spectrum of asset classes targeted by high net-worth individuals, institutional investors, pension funds or private banks, alternative investments are becoming popular offering more diversification to investors' portfolios. The benefits of such diversification have been demonstrated by Harry Max Markowitz ( 1990, Nobel Prize in Economics ) in the Modern Portfolio Theory.

In this article we will take a summary look at Forestry Investments in general. We will look at how investing in Forestry works, how forestry and timber perform as an asset class, the expected rate of return for investors, and the inherent risks involved with this alternative asset.

Forestry Investment Asset Performance

Forestry investments are nothing new, and institutional investors have been investing in forestry for decades, as exposure to this asset class generally lowers risk whilst at the same time outperforming more volatile equity markets.

Over the last 14 years if you had invested only in stocks, you would have made losses in four of those years (on average), whilst timber showed a profit every single year. Stocks outperformed timber during only five of the fourteen years, whilst Timber beat the stock market eight out of fourteen.

Savvy Investors in British forestry funds last year saw far higher returns than from other traditional classes of assets. According to the Investment Property Databank* the UK Forestry Index returned 31.6 per cent in 2007, some six hundred per cent more than equities, which could manage barely 5.3 per cent, and 500 per cent more than bonds at 6.4 per cent.

Since their introduction in 1993, Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have steadily taken market share from index-based mutual funds. Today they account for 40% of the index fund marketplace and show no signs of slowing down. These baskets of securities that passively track an index (in most cases) and trade throughout the day like stocks have profoundly impacted the investment industry. Active traders take advantage of the stock-like features of ETFs: limit order purchasing, shorting, and options. For the index investor, the low ongoing costs of ETFs represent an opportunity to squeeze greater returns from a buy-hold-rebalance portfolio.

It's important to keep the ETF-mutual fund decision in perspective. Your choice of investment vehicle will have much less of an impact on your portfolio's long-term performance than your ability to build and faithfully implement a risk-appropriate asset allocation plan. That being said, if you already have a long-term investment plan and you wish to maximize your chances of achieving your financial goals, this article can help you determine whether ETF investing is right for you.

ETF Advantages

The most glaring advantage of ETFs over mutual funds is their lower expense ratios. Comparing a popular basket of domestic and international index funds with their ETF counterparts, the ETFs have an average expense ratio advantage of .11% annually. This advantage obviously becomes more meaningful when a large initial investment grows undisturbed over several years. While ETF-like expense ratios are available through exclusive mutual fund share classes like Vanguard's Admiral Class ($100,000 investment generally required), ETFs clearly have lower ongoing costs than most comparable mutual funds.

ETFs are also more tax efficient than mutual funds. The process of creating and redeeming new shares "in-kind" allows most ETFs to unload low cost-basis shares and theoretically eliminate unwanted capital gains distributions. Additionally, for tax loss harvesters, the vast number of ETF choices allows for efficient swapping of capital-losing funds for suitable alternatives.

Finally, ETFs have a significant advantage in trading flexibility. Since ETFs are traded through brokers instead of fund companies, an investor can buy an ETF on any platform at any time of day. Daily holdings reports and up-to-the-minute estimates of underlying fund value (Intraday Indicative Value, or IIV) give ETF shoppers the transparency they need. Although trading costs must be considered, the fund minimums and redemption fees often associated with mutual funds do not apply to ETFs. Additionally, the ability to specify trading prices through limit orders can help to maintain a precise allocation.

Mutual Fund Advantages

While ETFs can boast of low ongoing expenses, mutual funds have a clear advantage in transaction costs. In general, mutual funds can be purchased commission-free through their fund company with relatively low investment minimums and automatic dividend reinvestment. On the contrary, ETF purchasers must pay a trading commission for each brokerage transaction (including dividend reinvestments, in some cases) and must also consider the bid/ask spread, or the difference between what a buyer is willing to pay for a security and the seller's offer price. Commissions are typically between $5 and $25 per trade, while bid/ask spreads vary based on an ETF's liquidity. Among a popular basket of domestic and international ETFs, the average bid/ask spread cost is typically between .01% and .04% of the transaction value. Investors must exercise caution when trading spreads are more than a few cents as an ETF's market price can deviate significantly from the underlying value of its holdings (NAV).

Many would argue that the mutual fund structure encourages good investing behavior. For instance, commission-free trading facilitates a dollar-cost averaging strategy, or the practice of investing a fixed dollar amount on a regular schedule in order to purchase a greater number of low-priced shares. An investor who doesn't pay transaction costs also doesn't hesitate to perform a rebalancing trade when his portfolio deviates from a risk-appropriate allocation; a transaction cost might cause him to delay this important action.

Investments these days can be made all over the world. Through the use of computers and the internet, the investor can buy property in any country in the world (subject to local laws) and they can buy shares and stocks in any country in the world.

The main considerations are the return on their investment and the relative risk associated with currency markets and the economic conditions within the country of choice.

For the investor that is starting out in their investment life, it would be wise to keep their investment in the home country of choice. There are lots of facilities that allow investors to invest overseas using home grown investment vehicles.

Professional investors prefer a mix of local shares and property as well as a good mix of overseas shares and property investments.

Learning how to create an investment plan is one of the most important things that you will need to do if you want to become financially free. Ultimately investing is just the outworking of a plan to get you from one place to another, this is why investments are often called investment vehicles. Without a plan you increase your risk of losing money and decrease your risk of making money, so a solid investment plan is essential to financially success.

Where Do You Want To Be

The first two things you have to do in order to create your investment plan is to work out where you are now financially and where you want to be financially and in what time frame.

A lot of people have the financial goal of having $1,000,000 in their bank account.

Like the mythical siren's call, the pitch is enticing - a seemingly perfect investment.

Investors can buy into a contract offering a minimum return with the potential to capture the upside of increases in the stock market while avoiding portfolio value declines if - and when - the market goes down.

This blend of promises can be found in 'equity-indexed annuities" or EIAs offered by insurance companies.

And these offerings have become popular given the steep declines in the stock market. According to a report in the WSJ (9/02/09), sales of EIAs during the first half of 2009 rose 20% compared to a year ago to $15.2 billion.

As compelling as these products may sound, they are anything but simple. There are many complicated moving parts to each EIA contract. So buyer beware!

Think of investing as finding the route to your destination (a goal) and matching that with the appropriate mode of transportation (or investment vehicle) to get you there. You may be traveling from Boston to New York and can choose highways or back roads. You can choose hi-speed rail, a car, a bus, a bike or even a plane. You can drive or fly yourself or hire someone else to drive.

Investing in Uranium

The price of Uranium has been extremely volatile over the past year from a high of just over $300 (USD) per Metric Tonne in June of 2007 to a recent low of $75 (USD) per Metric Tonne as of October 11, 2007.

This price drop has drastically affected major Uranium producers with some stock prices dropping by half. As the world commodity boom and demand for energy continues to escalate, it is time to invest in Uranium while stocks are extremely cheap to reap the benefits of the rebound in Uranium prices.

Many analysts have stated that Uranium has hit a bottom and is ready for a rally as Demand from China, India and other expanding economies will continue to drive prices higher. Investors thinking about playing this scenario should look to Canada for Uranium investment opportunities as Canada is the largest producer in the World.

As a result of the price slide in Uranium there are many great bargains to invest capital.
